Blade-smithing 101 Class

Step into the forge and become the Blacksmith’s apprentice for a day!

Learn the basics of blade smithing in this beginner’s course.

You’ll start the day with a railroad spike and walk away with a blade forged by your own two hands.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  1. The forge is HOT! Usually around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that the entire temperature of the building can be uncomfortably warm if you’re not used to it. It’s open to the air and there’s a big fan but NO AC. Please keep this in mind when booking classes during the summer months.

  2. Sparks Fly - Dress Accordingly. Proper workwear must include safety glasses (provided) and closed toed shoes, preferably comfortable ones as you’ll be standing at the anvil for a couple of hours. Beyond that, I’d recommend cotton denim pants and long sleeved shirt to keep the sparks off your skin but, if you think you can take the heat, that’s up to your personal preference.

  3. Hammers are heavy. Be prepared to use your arm muscles. This class will involve swinging a 3lb hammer at regular intervals for however long it takes to make your knife while also holding your work with smithing tongs, which is also surprisingly tiring.
